What is a carbon footprint?

Energy is the ability to do work. By definition, we see that everything we do uses some level of energy. This includes riding a car, watching television, eating a suya, etc.

The source of the energy used matters, because it determines what kind of waste or byproduct is produced as energy is being generated and consumed.

Most energy being used today is generated by petroleum gases and other fossil fuels; hence, when such energy is being generated and consumed it releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere. This carbon byproduct of energy usage is called a carbon footprint.

Globally, each person produces about 4-5 tons of CO2 on average. That is massive. The impact of this carbon footprint is even more devastating as it contributes to global warming, extreme weather events, and disruptions to ecosystems.

The good news however is that we can each contribute to carbon reduction through simple daily adjustments. Here are 3 ways you can play a part

  • Enhance energy efficiency in your home by switching to clean energy alternatives such as solar systems.
  • Turn off lights, television sets and other electrical appliances when not in use.
  • Reuse plastic packaging and opt for biodegradable packaging as much as you can.

With consistent efforts on an individual and regional level, we can slowly but surely decarbonise the climate.
